INDIA GATE
India Gate's foundation was laid on 10th February 1921 by Duke of Connaught and it was completed in 1931. India Gate (originally called All India War Memorial) was built to commemorate Indian Soldiers who died in World War I and Afghan wars. India Gate was built by the famous British architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens.
On top of the 42meter tall India Gate, following line is written in capital letters:Names of the soldiers who died in World War I and Afghan wars are inscribed on the wall. In 1971, Amar Jyoti (The Flame of the immortal warrior) was added, which marks the tomb of unknown soldier. The shrine itself is a black marble cenotaph with a rifle placed on its barrel, crested by a soldier's helmet. Each face of the cenotaph has inscribed in gold the words "Amar Jawan" (Immortal Warrior). This cenotaph is itself placed on an edifice which has on its four corners four flames that are perpetually kept alive.
Today India Gate is not only a tribute to the brave soldiers, who give the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that you and I can sleep in peace. Its also turning out to be place where people from every walk of life come to spend quality time with their love ones.
