Living Positively with HIV
Ram Prakash alias Ramu came to Delhi from Mirzapur (UP) for a job. He found lodging in the Yamuna Pushta slum, where he started smoking and drinking under peer pressure. He would pull a rickshaw during daytime and have drinking sessions at night. Unfortunately, his room partner was a TB patient, and hard labour coupled with a lack of proper nutrition made Ramu contract the infection.
CSI?s social worker contacted Ramu during a health awareness program organised in the latter?s area. Here, when Ramu was subsequently examined, he was diagnosed as suffering from TB. He was then referred to the nearest chest clinic at Narela.
After counseling, regular health checkups and proper medication for 6 months, Ramu has become a healthy person. He has regained his earlier fitness level and his TB has been cured. Simultaneously, coming into contact with CSI?s social worker has encouraged him to work as a motivator to other persons for the prevention of TB, HIV/AIDS, other STDs.
