Delhi Invaded!

These days when you move out after sun sets, you will find of Swarms of insects following you everywhere, shops, home, parks, traffic lights, lamp posts literally every where. Scientists says after harvest season is over these insects migrate to Delhi from paddy fields in Haryana and this year the breeding was much more than previous year due to prolonged monsoon. It might well continue for next two weeks said the MCD official.

It’s not just the Inflation that is keeping shoppers at home. Small insects that cling to lights on the streets and even inside shops are making shopping difficult after sunset.
Some shop owners in popular shopping destinations like Khan Market, Karol Bagh and Rajouri Garden have installed electric pest killers, which have, however, not been very effective. “I have installed one pest killer. But every time the door opens the insects sneak in. It can’t be avoided,” Kailash Arora, a shop owner in Karol Bagh, said. He said his customers say they prefer to come during the day.
The situation is worse for shops that have open counters. “My shop has no doors. There is no way we can stop the insects from getting in,” Subhash Sharma, shop owner in Rajouri Garden, said. Sharma, however, said his sales have not been affected. “I don’t think the insects can stop shoppers. Those who have to shop will shop whether insect or no insect,” Sharma, a cloth merchant, said.
Shop owners at Khan Market also agree that there is a problem but no solution. “This problem persists all over the city and since it is just a matter of few days, nobody is taking it seriously. All we can do is put off a few lights but then that too is not of much help,” shop owner Karanjeet Singh said. Some shops have installed the electric pest killer. “As long as we have enough customers it is not a problem,” Singh said. “We too are witnessing the problem but we know that it is just a matter of few days. Some shops owners have put small traps on the doors under the light to catch the insects,” Satendar Wadhwa of Greater Kailash I market, said.
Some shoppers, however, feel undeterred by the insect menace. “There are insects in our homes, in Metro stations — every where. What difference does it makes if they are there in the market place as well?” Preeti Khanna, a shopper at Khan Market, asked.”I am aware of the problem and I wanted to come during the day time. I have to complete my shopping before Diwali. So insects don’t make a difference,” Sneh Chopra, another Shopper, said.
The civic authorities are also aware of the problem. “The MCD carries out routine fogging for mosquitoes. These insects pose no harm and are around for just a few weeks. We do not spray any insecticides... to kill them,” an MCD official said....
