Life in a slow motion
The stretch from Pulbangash Metro Station to Filmistan is a commuter’s worst nightmare come true. With each passing day, traffic situation on this stretch seems to be getting no better.Just come to think of it. Even the 7-8m wide road is failing to accommodate the heavy flow of traffic here. Right from the rehriwallas to heavy duty vehicles, all can be seen plying on the same stretch with regular frequency. Right from the morning, this stretch starts getting crammed with the heavy traffic flow. The irony is that omnipresent traffic cops are busy issuing challans even if they are following the traffic light. Says Himanshu Gulati, a regular commuter, "Even if it’s 15 seconds for the signal to turn red, the cop standing here on the signal is busy jotting down the car number rather than managing the traffic."As the DCP traffic Northern Range RK Pandey explained, "The slow moving vehicles are the major cause of this traffic chaos at this place. But unfortunately they cannot be done away with and, hence, the chaotic situation."While the afternoons are relatively better, it is during the evening hours that the traffic goes haywire. With traffic converging at just single point from various routes, it becomes a clear bottleneck. "The slow moving traffic hampers the smooth passage of vehicles. It takes almost an hour to cross this one kilometre stretch," says a commuter Ramesh Talwar at the traffic signal. And, predictably, the bottleneck brings out the real instincts of a Delhiite. "There are 4-5 traffic constables deployed on this particular stretch to avoid any traffic jam," confirms DCP Pandey. He even attributed the traffic snarls to the narrow road. So would slapping challan on the violators help? "This will further aggravate the situation and will lead to more chaos. We do challan traffic violators but that’s during the lean hours," explains Pandey. According to him, the main aim of traffic police is to regulate traffic.
