Mystery surrounding 'love' and 'I'
LOVE IS born out of nothingness. That nothingness is not you, it is God. As long as the ’I’ is there, the object is there, that object is you. How emptiness is created, how to go to nothingness, here is a story.
In a certain village a man opened a fish shop with a big sign: "Fresh fish sold here." The very first day a man came to the shop and read, ’Fresh fish sold here’. He laughed, "Fresh fish? Are stale fish sold anywhere? What is the point of writing ’fresh’ fish?"
The shopkeeper thought the man was right. Besides, ’fresh’ gave the idea of ’stale’ to the customers. He deleted ’fresh’ from the signboard. The board now read, ’Fish sold here’. An old lady visiting the shop the next day read aloud, "Fish sold here’? Do you also sell fish somewhere else?"
’Here’ was erased. Now the board read, ’Fish sold’. The third day, another customer came to the shop and said, "Fish sold’? Does anybody give fish for free?"
The word ’sold’ was deleted, Only fish’ was left now. An aged man came and said to the shopkeeper, "Fish? Even a blind man from a distance could tell from the smell that fish is sold here." ’Fish’ was removed. The board was now blank.
Another customer asked, "Why is this board here? It undermines the shop’s appearance."The board was also removed. Nothing remained after the process of elimination; every word had been removed, one by one. And what was left was nothingness, an emptiness.
Love can only be born out of emptiness because only emptiness is capable of merging with another emptiness; only a void can become one with another void. Not two persons, but nothingness can meet because now there is no barrier. Except nothingness all else has walls around it.
When a personality vanishes, ’am-ness’ is not found. What remains then, is the whole, not ’I’. When this happens all barriers, all walls crumble and out rushes the Ganges of love that was hidden within, yet it was always ready and waiting for one to become nothingness and thus allow its flow.
We dig a well. Water is already there down below; it doesn’t have to be brought up from anywhere. Only the earth and stones have to be dug up and removed. What is it that we are doing when we create a well? We create emptiness so that the water that is hidden underneath can find a space to move into, a space in which to show itself. It is already there inside, it wants space to manifest. It craves an emptiness, which it is not getting.
Similarly, love is already there deep inside human beings; what is needed is space, emptiness where it can surface. But, we are full of our ’I’, everyone goes on screaming their ’I’. And remember, as long as your being screams ’I’, you are a well full of sand and stones and the stream of love will not surge into this well – it cannot.
