Style check!
-Puja's Point
Every person loves to be admired or at least looked at. What distinguishes one from the crowd is one's unique sense of style and attitude. Sportspersons are one such species who trend-set distinct style statements, which their fans die for!.THE CONCEPT of style differs from person to person. It is contagious, if we may say so, because as soon as a new style comes out, youngsters, teenagers and youth do not mind wearing it on themselves.
Here I talk about three fine sportspersons who have redefined what it means to be stylish. Steve Cabucio, vice president, Reebok, made an interesting comment at the launch of his latest headwear, on assimilation of style in sports, “I would have thought someone would be crazy to go ahead and want one of those things. But then, I found that these people are the ones who set trends and if they like these, the rest of the country may too.” He may be right. From David Beckham’s tattoo to Dhanraj Pillai’s ponytail, sports lovers never hesitate to follow their favourite player’s style sense.
Indians revere sportspersons too, for whatever they do, on or off the field. Our style icons in sports are much adored personalities — no matter what their choices and values are.
Here, sports has been scaling new heights along with their unique style and glamour. While cricket, being the front-runner, continues to rake in billions of rupees, other sports such as football, tennis, golf, badminton, motor racing, hockey, chess etc are slowly catching up. In fact, Music Television (MTV) and Elle now present awards to the most stylish sports personalities. Remember, Leander Paes walking away with the MTV award while Ajay Jadeja swept the Elle award off the stands.
The passion of tennis is absorbed in Leander’s veins. In many ways he embodies gentleness in the choices he opts for, style being one of them. He had won the 2003 MTV award for being the most stylish person in sports. He continues to be the heartthrob of his fans. Style gurus in India agree that he looks like an epitome of grace and passion, on and off the field. Mostly, spotted in parties wearing black formal suits, he also keeps switching from a French beard to a clean shaven look. He wears an ear rivet. He has remarkably recovered from a recent attack of neurocysticercosis (the most common parasitic infestation of the central nervous system worldwide). Completely rejuvenated, he is now back to the game and life with a bang.
His cheerful disposition can make a good cover page. He was voted the ’Asian player of the month’ in May 1999 and in the same year, he won the Sikkim state award as well as the Arjuna award.Generously gifted, the young and handsome Yuvraj Singh is looked upon as a strong, fearless natural, destined for greater things. He loves wearing good clothes and going to discos. He confesses, “ I love wearing my style and attitude on my sleeves. There are a few favourites like Reebok, Armani and Versace.” Apart from Yuvraj’s handsome personality, his temperament, self-belief, natural talent and hunger for success make him one of the most stylish players we have. The brand ambassador for Westside can be spotted looking down from the hoardings today. Although, he has been criticised for his stylish demeanour but this does not bother him to change much. He quips, “ I fail to understand what relation does it have with my performance on the field?”
