“The spirit of democracy cannot be established in the midst of terrorism, whether governmental or popular.”

Terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives”

Dr. Palki Vajpayee November 27, 2008 at 9:58 AM

Terrorism is in good part an effect of government propaganda; it serves to deflect attention from governmental abuse toward a mostly imagined, highly dangerous outside enemy”

Simply put, I will say that we are on the side of the aspirations of all peace-loving Muslims, and together we must build a new spirit of partnership to combat terrorists who threaten our common security."

"Years ago I used to think it was possible for a novelist to alter the inner life of the culture. Now bomb-makers and gunman have taken that territory. They make raids on human consciousness. What writers used to do before we were all incorporated."

If India were to formally accuse the Pakistani government, then major diplomatic problems could ensue, but that may be less likely happen as quickly as occurred in the past when relations were more fraught. An attack by militants on the Indian parliament in December 2001 nearly led to war between the two countries. Even if there were some kind of link to Pakistan, that would be different to a link to the Pakistani government, which is itself battling terrorists and suffering heavy casualties among both security forces and civilians.
The detention of a number of the militants and their subsequent interrogation should provide evidence for Indian authorities to try to understand any international links. The growing tide of attacks, particularly this year, raises major problems for the Indian authorities. As well as tracking down any gunmen who have escaped, the local and national authorities will also have to deal with the issue of public confidence in their ability to get a grip on the situation.

Anonymous,  November 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM

while the attack was highly organised, it was not necessarily that advanced in terms of technology, with automatic weapons and grenades. It had more the look of a small-scale guerrilla war than a typical al-Qaeda attack. A group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attacks but little is known of it. The men were of South Asian appearance and reportedly spoke Hindi, indicating they originated in India. Attacks over recent years have seen a variety of different groups named, particularly the Indian Mujahideen who had apparently threatened to attack Mumbai in September, claiming that Muslims had been harassed.

Mumbai is one of the largest gold hubs, estimated to be trading around half of the 700-800 tonnes of the precious metal imported each year into India, the world's largest gold consumer. It houses around 400 jewellers and 1,000 traders and wholesalers, according to data from analyst Bhargav Vaidya.

It is also the main financial centre in India, and initial investor reaction to the attack suggested that India's traditionally resilient markets would take a bigger hit than from previous episodes in the city's violent history.

While the spot market in the city's Zaveri Bazar and the futures markets remained shut, banks reported minimal business as consumers stayed indoors following the attacks by suspected Islamist gunmen on a railway station, a popular restaurant and plush hotels, where they held hostages

Despite being a nation that is constantly in the shadow of terror attacks, we sadly lack an unequivocal anti-terror policy. Vote-bank politics and parochial prudery upstage the national interests. Even now, certain sections in Tamil Nadu brazenly glorify the LTTE. As long as we continue to politicise everything, India will remain a soft target

Dr. Pragya bajaj November 28, 2008 at 8:41 AM

Why does the state always fail? The question needs to be addressed without demagogy. The time is not to blame the police and politics but to think out of the box to tackle the situation. National security must take precedence over all other considerations.
