Call centre & diabetics!!

The "epidemic'' has for long worried doctors in the country. But with younger and newer groups of previously fighting-fit adults now fast falling prey to adult diabetes, doctors are advocating regular medical check-ups and an active and regulated lifestyle to keep the disease at bay.
This latest report, a pilot study conducted to assess the occurrence of diabetes among young call centres' employees, indicated a dangerous trend noticed among this population. Adults between the age of 19 to 31 years were found to have Type II diabetes. Called the adult diabetes (Type II-diabetes) is caused due to insulin malfunction.
Calling the trend the tip of the ice-berg and a dangerous indication of more stubborn and fatal on-coming ailments among young call centre employees, Director of the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre A. K. Jhingan said:
"The fatal mix of stress, irregular eating hours, unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise often triggers the medical condition.''
The present study was undertaken by the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre as a prelude to larger project that would involve several call centres and a greater number of subjects. The study conducted over two years from 2004 to 2006 took into account the medical condition of the employees when they started working at the call centres and notes their progressive physical deterioration, which makes them prone to various lifestyle diseases.
The Delhi Diabetes Research Centre having identified individuals with diabetes and those prone to the same has initiated the subjects to corrective lifestyle therapy coupled with a strict exercise regime.
"This we hope will improve their condition and ensure that these young individuals don't become dependent on medication to regulate their disease,'' said Dr. Jhingan.
