In the name of God

So much goes on in this country in the name of religion. It makes me wonder, where did we go wrong? Has the government at the Centre failed in maintaining the secular nature of our country? Will things improve in the near future?.
EVERYDAY, FOR the past few days, the newspapers have it. A report on how Christians in Kandhamal are being targeted by the Bajrang Dal and VHP. Animated reporters and newsreaders on TV have been talking about how violence has gripped the region rendering hundreds homeless and forcing them to live in relief camps. Riots, politics, the blame game, religion…this news story had all the elements to make the headlines. But there was something which happened in Kandhamal which put the entire nation to shame. A nun was gang raped by the Bajrang Dal activists. On August 25, the second day of the anti-Christian violence, a mob of 40-50 men, shouting Jai Bajrang Bali, came looking for her at a house where she and a Christian priest had taken shelter. In the nun’s own words, “I hid myself under the staircase while the crowd was shouting, ‘Where is that sister? Come, let us rape her, at least hundred people should rape her.’” In minutes, the nun was found, beaten mercilessly and subjected to gang rape. One man stood on her left hand and another on the right throughout the ordeal. Isn’t that ridiculous? This barbarous crime was committed by so-called followers of Lord Hanuman and protectors of Hinduism. Does Hinduism justify going wild and raping a Christian woman?
So much goes on in this country in the name of religion. It makes me wonder, where did we go wrong? Has the government at the Centre failed in maintaining the secular nature of our country? Has the Naveen Patnaik-government failed to handle the situation? Should the Bajrang Dal be banned? As the blame game of politics continues, can’t just someone ask those monsters, “Ghar pe maa behen nahin hai kya?”
