Monumental neglect
Perhaps, we can call it a case of history repeating itself. Tripolia Gateways, one of the several historical gates of Delhi, are in a shambles. Located at the Old GT Karnal Road, one of the dustbowls of North Delhi, these monuments are crying for attention and they are in such a dilapidated state that they may collapse like a pack of cards any time. Built in the 17th century by Nazir Mahaldar Khan, they are unique in themselves. Now in a dilapidated state, this historical site has not only been reduced to a garbage disposal site but also as a public urinal. The volume of traffic is increasing on this stretch and the gates are blocked by debris. Ajay Gupta, who has a shop in Ghanta Ghar, said, "It takes me at least half an hour to cross this stretch. The rubble all over not only obstructs the road but also makes it difficult to roll down the window as it stinks badly. Also the site has become a shelter for stray animals." This is also equally destroying the sanctity of the monument. When media contacted ASI official M Mohammad, he said, "Talks are on with the MCD to decrease the existing road level to 1.6 meter so that traffic passing though the gateways do not cause damage to the monument.Talks are on even with the traffic police to divert traffic from there so that maintenance work can be started." But the MCD officials informed that their job was limited to cleaning the debris.
